Thermoplastic Polyolefin (TPO) single-ply roofing is a hot-air welded thermos-plastic roofing membrane consisting of three layers: TPO polymer base, polyester-reinforced fabric center and thermoplastic polyolefin compound top ply. TPO provides some of the highest roof surface reflectivity to keep commercial buildings cooler. First introduced to the roofing market in the early 1900’s as a more efficient and economical alternative, TPO roofing was created to perform better than EPDM rubber roofing and cost less than PVC roofing, while still providing all the benefits of a hot-air welded system. Since TPO is a fairly new roofing material, research continues to improve and find the most durable product formulation.

I had a very good experience working with Bolt on the removal of our old roof and the installation of a TPO roof.  The Bolt team was flexible and able to install the roof over the weekend since we are a child care program and it was going to be impossible to install it during our normal operating hours.  The installation was right on schedule and they did an excellent job cleaning up afterwards to ensure that nothing was left behind that could have possibly injured a child.  The price was very competitive and the staff was completely professional to work with.  I have since recommended Bolt highly and will continue to do so.

TPO is manufactured to match any type of commercial building. It’s available in light grey, white and black reflective color options and, thanks to modern technology, all color options are UV resistant. TPO is also 100% recyclable, making it a favorite for many “green” property owners.

TPO is a great flat roofing option because it’s both attractive and cost efficient. It offers both similar benefits to PVC roofing, but at a much lower price point, while also being resistant to mold, tears, UV radiation and heat.

TPO membranes are manufactured to come in wide, but lightweight sheets, making them easier to install with fewer seams. Although TPO is UV and heat-resistant, repeated exposure and structural stress can have an effect on its ability to complete its expected life cycle. Like any other flat roof, TPO roofs will require regular repair and maintenance to ensure they perform their best and last as long as possible. Partnering with a BOLT expert ensures that the repair is done correctly and there will be no future problems.

Compared to many other roofing materials, TPO roofing is one of the lower maintenance options available today. As with any other flat roofing product, a maintenance check should be done periodically to prevent future problems. Getting a maintenance check done by a professional is a great way to ensure your property remains leak-free and the roof will last its full life cycle.
