The U.S. Department of Energy recommends between R-49 and R-60 of attic insulation for houses in the Midwest. Unfortunately, most homes don’t meet these standards. Some homes even have as little as R-19 installed. Yikes! Adding fiberglass blown-in insulation over your existing insulation is an easy and inexpensive way to meet current recommendations.
COST OF ATTIC INSULATION
Truth be told, the cost of attic insulation varies depending on the type of installation you choose and the preparation needed with the existing space. But for most homes, you’ll need to install on top of existing attic insulation. In which case, we recommend blown-in insulation. Blown-in insulation requires very little preparation, gets into the cracks and areas where normal bat insulation won’t work and is calculated based on a combination of how much R-value you want to add and the total coverage area (in square feet). All of which helps you save more money.
OKAY, SO WHAT IS R-VALUE?
Basically, R-value is how well a material insulates per inch of thickness. According to energystar.gov, “R-Value is a measure of insulation’s ability to resist heat traveling through it. The higher the R-Value the better the thermal performance of the insulation.” Our fiberglass blown-in insulation provides approximately R-3 per inch installed.
ADVANTAGES OF FIBERGLASS BLOW-IN INSULATION
Not only can fiberglass blown-in insulation be applied directly over the top of existing insulation, which negates removal costs*, it’s also fire resistant and isn’t affected by moisture, unlike cellulose insulation. Blown-in insulation also doesn’t settle, so it maintains its R-value as it ages. *Note: This does not apply to Vermiculite
NO-MESS INSULATION INSTALLATION
While installing your new insulation, we aim to ensure there is there is no disruption to your household. All we require is access to your attic, where a technician will run a hose to transport the insulation, and then distribute it throughout the space. This evenly applied insulation process will save you money in heating and cooling costs each and every month.
To urge homeowners to update insulation to meet current standards, local energy companies are providing ways to help improve their energy efficiency. Ask us for ways we can help cut the costs of improving your attic insulation.
